Task five

My ambition as a graphic designer is to be successful and known within the industry not only for the type of work i do but my dedication and personal interaction with my clients, I wish to collaborate with other designers and build up a diary of contacts and close friends on which i can rely on if in need.

I wish to be diverse in what i do and cope with various graphic design jobs such as editorial corporate and illustration my main aim is to use all of these sectors together. I would be interested in working with packaging a lot more as the interaction essence of design not only inspires me but excites me within.

I desire to be a freelance artist/ own a company yet this is very hard to get noticed and get yourself out there  a lot of hard work will soon be well worth it as a student this scares me a little yet from what i have learnt from this module i understand how present myself to my clients and where to meet potential new ones.

I have learnt from my research your website is very important as a creative with visual means this needs to be exciting and corporate to appeal to all audiences many of the websites i have visit were complex and pretty much the same as each others. I have noticed the importance of a blog as when you see artists work and a short summary you almost think in there mind set and feel as if you know them this is really good aura and vibe to have with clients, so i will continue with mine.

Being interested in print finishes i think it would be valuable of my time to do a placement in a print company that way i can really understand the processes and valuation of certain designs this would make me more competitive at getting a job as an in house designer as you are mainly the only graphic designer in the company you need to be able to take artwork to the print level. by gaining a lot of experience now whist i can will expand my knowledge and make me more valuable.

Task four

Who else is out there/ how good are they?

Who am I competing against?
What do they offer?
What makes me better?
What makes me different?
 Tigerprint
Steph says hello
Elizabeth anne designs

Tigerprint-
Offer great competetions on their websites with cash prizes which links into giving something away for free. they also have great industry link with Marks and Spencer and have gained all of their custom designing gift wrap and cards. What i believe makes me better is the fact i know about paper based products and innovate ways into folding and interactive elements of design. I can use typography significantly and understand hierarchy of type. Good insight of effective ways to use colour and print finishes such as flocking embossing and de-bossing. cards are a common thing now they hold the same principles and have never changed since they were created its time for the new! Im different as i want to change the way we use design yet in an fun and imaginative way.

Steph says hello-
This is a freelance illustrator who has just finished her degree and started a new business she sells on sociey6 and has just opened an online etsy shop she offers free prints and runs little competitions of her own and gives away goodies with her products. has a good dilogue with customers and has a range of conatcts due to working with them or her work featuring in the magazine etc. what i believe makes me better my designs are diverse and dont paticulally work a simliar way every time. Im different because i design in a different way i like corporate illustrations not just light hearted.

Elizabeth anne designs-
I found a blog with lovely wedding stationary on designed by this artist I like this sort of thing as you want to be corporate yet have the freedom to have a creative flair on things as a freelance artist i haven't heard much of her work which could possibly mean not promoted herself very well. she has man excellent designs on her blog and has work. as i work in a hotel i would be able to leave business cards to be given out for wedding show rounds and possible a booklet of my previous work this way i am giving to my target market directly. As i wont just be dependent on this type of work it makes my success as a designer more likely!

Task three

How will i promote myself?

What do they want to hear?  DESIGN SELLS!
What should i say to them? how can  change there business for the better without saying what im going to do a good mission statement.
How will i communicate to them? website , mailshots , networking events

Summary:
From the knowledge i have received from the what are you worth lecture, i have found it to be vitally important reaching out to my potential clients and how i portray me as a designer what are my qualities and inspires my design work what are my values. I have to get these across to my clients to win over there spirit for life this may be concerns in the environment eco designs as graphics uses a lot of paper results in a lot of waste do i value the important of recyclable materials etc. In order to this well i will need to have a positive position statement on my website home page. My website will be a main port of call for my clients as it is easily accessible and can feature previous design work, with examples of successful businesses such as innocent (smoothie making company) i have realised the importance of having a feedback section to keep in contact with my clients find out there wants needs and desires for the future products. Keeping a dialogue with customers i believe helps them relate to you on a personal level and more importantly the products you are producing.   Where is the money? there is no need for me to be using my portfolio for designs which are not needed this wont excite potential clients or employers if i can create things which are new exciting and intriguing employers will be able to see the desire for me to work for there business and be a valued asset. If i was a freelance designer it just wouldnt be enough to create the communicating aspect and delivering it to companies will become essential to the success and who you communicate it to! Being a freelance designing is running your own business you have to work out how much your spening whats your hourly rate? and how much your selling for profit!

FOUR P's
PRODUCT PLACE PROMOTION PRICE

Summary

From the marketing lecture what i have learnt about me as a designer i can find out what the current market needs are and apply my current design practice work to fit into the " niche" . The type of industry i want to work for is mainly within the retail sector where the four P's are very relevant I will provide the creative element of the product yet what i will design will be affected by the price place and promotion of the product there is only so much i will be paid to carry out the work and the successfulness of the product will depend on the consumer. So promotion will be important where are my clients how will they see relevant advertisements? How much will the item cost am i out pricing the market etc how much will it cost me to design will i be making a profit. All the elements of the four P's have to be precise other wise the product will fail in the market. Currently in my design practice i do questionnaires and have interim crits of my work to see how im doing and potentially this is what companies do to find out the information they need to be a successful trader in the retail sector. designing for the needs of the client whos buying it can be difficult yet so rewarding.

50 Words about me!

What drives me as a designer is discovering line and shapes adding personal touches to everything i do. Exploring where line is used and how i can apply it to various projects inspires me to break the barriers of very controlled aspects of the design industry. Social change interests me and the psychology of design. As my designs are lighthearted this can help people relate to what im doing and speak to them o a personal level.

Self Evaluation.

1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have
applied them? Throughout this module i have developed skills on photoshop and how to make a pdf work successfully. also i have worked more on documenting my work throughout my sketchbook and tried to be as thorough as possible when explaining my ideas.

2. What approaches to/methods of research have you developed and how have they informed your
design development process? methods of research i did a lot of my primary research by gathering photos of textures in different environments and gathered nature objects such as leaves to draw from and work with. By documenting all this in a sketchbook i got a lot from it as it was easier to see where i was going from one stage to the next,

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these? My strengths throughout this project was documentation and i will use the same methods of documenting throughout the next module.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these more fully? The weaknesses throughout this module was my final idea of the books they looked unprofessional and scruffy, I am unsure of the processes when it comes to bringing everything together at the end and with this project i have really disappointed myself after putting a lot of effort into every other aspect of the brief and it not coming together as i would have hoped.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing
these?
1.lots of primary research- helps to gather a range of possible solutions.
2.dont look at the obvious within the brief go outside the box think of solutions which would not be apparent at first- create something new and innovative.
3. give extra time for bringing the product together-more professional feel to it.
4.time management-finishing the project for the studio deadline not hand in!-less stressful dont rush!!
5.if unsure ask!- final product is sliping because unsure on some of the programs ending up a botch job with the knowledge i know!

Product and distribution, why have you made this decision?

As i am making a series of books i will need to distribute them. Packaging would be difficult and unnecessary for a book that would be on a shelf. I am observing texture i am not promoting it I'm observing something that is already there.

Who is your audience and how do you intend to engage with them?
My target audience is very wide and variable Everyone can interact with this product if your interested in surface texture.

What is the function of the product- is it supposed to inform/ educate/ document/ entertain/ instruct?
My product documents i have made this decision due to the nature of what my subject matter is... textures. I will document them through a visual diary/ book.

How will the audience interact with the product?
The audience can interact with my product by looking at each page they will be in a concertina format so every page will need to be lifted up to look at.

For the collect 100 project i have decided to look at textures. this was relevant because i think they are interesting to work wih as everything has a texture! looking into textures initially i thought i would be dealing with physical textures but after researching into this there are many programs which you can create visual textures. To relate this into my design practice work i will be developing 4 books each with a different subject involving textures they all will be observational studies of the textures. I will be cutting a window from the pages to keep the work in small sections so they look more professional. i have made some design desicions about how the book will fold out i plan on doing a concetina due to the fact the subject is something which you interact with and a believe this fold pushes this idea forward. I want to work in a mix media way with the use of photography papers drawings etc.
